Encryption, square roots, and temperature conversion all rely on the same idea: a function that runs backward. Inverse functions are the mathematical undo button.

Function composition is the mathematical version of an assembly line: output of one function becomes input to the next. It's the idea underlying the chain rule, pipeline operators, and every functional programming language.

Adding a constant shifts the graph. Multiplying stretches it. Negating flips it. Master the algebra of function transformations once and you can read any curve at a glance.

Domain and range are a function's operating boundaries: the set of valid inputs and the set of possible outputs. Ignoring them is how square roots of negatives and divisions by zero sneak into calculations.

Calculus is hard mostly because precalculus is shaky. Master functions, transformations, and the unit circle here, and derivatives stop feeling arbitrary — they feel inevitable.

Calculus doesn't start at derivatives — it starts at a solid grasp of functions: what they are, how they transform, how they compose, and how to invert them. Precalculus builds that foundation. Skip it and calculus becomes symbol manipulation; understand it and the ideas make sense.
