About Ideasthesia

Our mission

Ideasthesia Institute advances research, education, and public understanding of neurodiversity, with a primary focus on autism, and explores how neurodivergent cognition shapes meaning-making, creativity, learning, and human systems.

Why "ideasthesia"

The word comes from the Greek for idea and sensation: concepts that arrive as something felt. A number with a color. A word with weight. A pattern you sense long before you can name it. Science has barely made room for it. Plenty of us have lived it for as long as we can remember.

We took the name because it describes how a lot of us make meaning. Not by translating the world into someone else's categories, but by perceiving it directly, through pattern, texture, depth, and devotion. We think that way of knowing deserves serious attention: its creativity, its strangeness, and the parts of it that feel closer to the mystical than the clinical.

Who this is for

Ideasthesia is made by neurodivergent people, for neurodivergent people. We don't spend our time explaining ourselves or defending our existence. We start from the premise that neurodivergent minds are whole, and we put our attention on what those minds actually do: notice, connect, obsess, build, create, and make sense of the world in their own way.

What we do

Ideasthesia Institute was founded in 2026, and our programs are being built now. Here is the work we are setting up:

• Ideas that fund the mission. We create intellectual and creative work, including writing, books, courses, and other projects, and put the proceeds back into the Institute's charitable work.
• Learning materials for kids. We are building ways to put learning materials into the hands of neurodivergent kids and the families around them, at no cost to them.
• Writing and free resources. We publish essays and long-form work on neurodivergent culture, cognition, creativity, and meaning-making, free to read.

Who we are

Ideasthesia was founded by Ryan Collison. I'm autistic, and we're an autistic family, so this work is not about a group of people out there. It's about us, our kids, and everyone who thinks the way we do.

I've spent about 20 years across substance use treatment, entrepreneurship, and the music business, including founding and selling healthcare companies and investing in early-stage founders. Through all of it, the thing I trusted most was the way my own mind finds patterns other people walk past. Ideasthesia is where I get to put that to work for people like us.

Ideasthesia Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Your support funds our writing, our learning materials for kids, and the programs we are building.
