These aren't random internet crowds. They're digital tribes—coherence communities forming and evolving in online spaces with the same gene-culture dynamics that create religions, nations, and social movements.

The substrate is different—pixels instead of proximity, algorithms instead of geography. But the mechanisms are identical: costly signaling, norm enforcement, identity fusion, ritual practice, and cultural selection operating on community-level variants.

Understanding digital tribes through gene-culture coevolution reveals why online communities succeed or fail, how they radicalize or moderate, and what happens when cultural evolution accelerates to internet speed.

Same Mechanisms, New Infrastructure

Pre-internet, if you had a weird interest or fringe belief, you were isolated. Maybe a few others in your city shared it, but finding them was hard.

Online, niche communities are one search away. The long tail is infinite. No matter how unusual your interest, identity, or ideology, there's a community for it.

This enables:

  • Rapid community formation around any shared interest
  • Ideological radicalization through concentrated exposure to extreme variants
  • Identity exploration unconstrained by local availability
  • Scale-free organization from dozens to millions of members

The same mechanisms that created religions now operate on any topic: coding languages, fitness regimes, investing strategies, political ideologies, conspiracy theories, fan communities.

Every successful online community starts with a shared narrative—a story about what the community is, why it matters, and who belongs.

The narrative must be:

  • Identity-conferring: Joining means becoming a certain kind of person
  • Adversarial: There's an outgroup to oppose
  • Meaningful: Participation serves a higher purpose
  • Actionable: Clear things to do that embody the identity

Successful founding narratives attract initial members who resonate with the framing. These early adopters become cultural models—their behaviors and norms set the template for later members.

Boundary Enforcement: In-Group Markers

Digital tribes develop linguistic markers that signal membership:

  • Jargon: "hodl," "tendies," "normies," "based," "pilled"
  • Memes: Shared references that outsiders don't understand
  • Shibboleths: Phrases or behaviors that identify authentic members vs. lurkers
  • Origin stories: Knowledge of community history and key events

The phenomenology is real. People report feeling deeply connected to communities they've never met in person. The synchronization is physiological—shared attention, emotional contagion, coordinated action—even through screens.

Radicalization: Cultural Evolution Under Selection

Digital tribes can radicalize—shift toward more extreme positions over time. This isn't psychological pathology. It's cultural evolution under specific selection pressures.

Engagement algorithms favor extreme content. Moderate positions don't generate clicks. Outrage does. Tribal affirmation does. The algorithm selects for cultural variants that maximize engagement, which means selecting for extremity.

Homophily accelerates this. People join communities that match their predispositions. They're exposed primarily to confirming information. The Overton window shifts. What was extreme becomes normal. What was moderate becomes suspect.

Costly signaling competition drives escalation. To prove commitment, members must signal harder than others. This creates an arms race of extremity—each member trying to out-signal peers by adopting more extreme positions, rhetoric, or actions.

Norm ratcheting makes moderation costly. Once the community norm shifts extreme, expressing moderate positions gets you sanctioned. You either conform to the new extreme or leave. The moderates exit, leaving only the committed, which shifts norms further.

The result: communities can evolve toward extremism not because members were initially radical, but because the selection environment (algorithmic + social) favors extreme variants.

This is cultural evolution operating faster than individual rationality can track. People don't consciously choose radicalization. They follow local incentives—trying to fit in, gain status, feel belonging—and the system-level outcome is extremism.

Moderation: Maintaining Functional Coherence

Not all digital tribes radicalize. Some maintain functional norms, productive discourse, and healthy cultures. What differentiates them?

Active norm enforcement: Communities with clear rules, consistent moderation, and low tolerance for toxicity stay healthier. Letting "free speech" mean "no boundaries" reliably produces dysfunction.

Prestige for quality: If high-status members model thoughtful engagement, others follow. If high-status members model outrage and extremism, that becomes the norm. Who gets prestige determines what behavior gets copied.

Structural diversity: Communities with subgroups, varying perspectives, and crosspollination resist echo chamber dynamics. Monocultures radicalize. Healthy ecosystems don't.

Purpose beyond identity: Communities organized around accomplishing things (building software, creating art, solving problems) stay functional. Communities organized purely around identity and opposition decay into purity spirals.

In AToM terms, the internet created a coherence marketplace—infinite options for identity, community, and meaning-making, with near-zero switching costs.

This has profound effects:

Fragmentation: People can sort into highly specific identity niches. You're not just "Christian"—you're Reformed Baptist, young-earth creationist, homeschooling, patriarchy-critical, urban. The fractal specificity is unprecedented.

Competition: Communities compete for members' attention, commitment, and identity. The selection pressure is intense. Communities that don't deliver coherence lose members to those that do.

Rapid evolution: Cultural variants evolve at internet speed. Norms, memes, practices, and beliefs that don't work get replaced within days or weeks, not generations.

Parasitic capture: Some communities optimize for addiction rather than coherence—maximizing time-on-platform without providing genuine value. Members stay hooked but don't flourish.

The same gene-culture dynamics that shaped human societies for millennia are now operating in digital environments with selection pressures no human population ever faced before. We're running Paleolithic psychology on Silicon Valley infrastructure.

The results are predictable: explosive cultural innovation, rapid community formation, frequent dysfunction, occasional brilliance, and constant churn.
